The Unity of William James's Thought (Vanderbilt Library of American Philosophy)
Published in Hardcover by Vanderbilt Univ Pr (03 June, 2002)
Average review score:

Epistemological, religious, and pragmatic mattersThe Unity Of William James's Thought by Wesley Cooper (Professor of Philosophy, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada) is a uniquely presented survey and an engaging examination of the philosophical works of eclectic personality and pioneering philosophy of William James. Professor Cooper rejects the commonly held view that James' philosophy was fragmented, countering that there is indeed a logical system and doctrine to be found in James' writings and legacy. Epistemological, religious, and pragmatic matters are analyzed and discussed in this scholarly and persuasively argued treatise. The Unity Of William James's Thought is a welcome and scholarly contribution to History of Philosophy supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

Upgrading to Fortran 90
Published in Paperback by Springer Verlag (September, 1995)
Average review score:

Excellent, exceptionally well suited for self-studyI have looked at many books on f90. This one excels by -being exceptionally clearly written in a colloquial style that explains the ideas behind the new concepts and is fun reading -explains simple things first and progresses to the more complex issues one at a time -contains only complete code examples that are transparent, easy to grasp, to the point, and illustrative -with this book, the transition from f77 to f90 is painless and very quick -everyone in our group enjoyed the book
weaknesses: -new intrinsic functions are not discussed in detail -few examples for character and I/O handling; probably best suited for people with science background/interest such as myself

The Victim Is Always the Same
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (May, 1973)
Average review score:

Reveiw of "The Victim is Always the Same"This is a book about medical ethics, written from a viewpoint that only a medical doctor could be privy to, but with tremendous insight and compassion for the point of view of the patient. It is a deeply thoughtful book; profound, and yet written with great simplicity and clarity. The questions it poses are addressed to the medical profession, but anyone who has ever struggled to get adequate treatment from the medical profession will find it equally important to read, and will experience a strong sense of affirmation and a realization that they are not alone. Moreover, the questions are ones that the medical profession will probably never attempt to respond to, unless they are asked by a great many more people. The case studies that Dr. Cooper uses to illustrate his point of view have to do with a condition called muscular dystonia (dystonia musculorum deformans), because the surgical treatment of that condition was his specialty. The book came to my attention because of the fact that my own son suffers from this same condition, and I will freely admit that the book is particularly important to me for that reason. But I very strongly believe that the questions that are being asked are of much broader importance than the specific condition. They are questions that relate not only to the medical profession as a whole, but to any and every field of service that has become weighted down with bureaucracy. As such, the book is even more important now than when it was first published nearly thirty years ago

The Vital Probe: My Life As a Brain Surgeon

Average review score:

Great Book, Must ReadI checked this book out of my school library and couldn't put it down. It is a great read and is very interesting. It is the story of Irving Cooper, an experimental brain surgeon, and how he tries to get his research accepted by his colleagues and also how he helps so many people that thought they would be incapacitated for life. Buy this book!

War and Healing: Stanhope Bayne-Jones and the Maturing of American Medicine (Southern Biography Series)
Published in Hardcover by Louisiana State University Press (May, 1992)
Average review score:

One of the great literary wonders? No...but......one of the lord's finest men! It doesn't get any better than Stanhope...I mean...I MEAn...how could it get any better than Stanhope?! The man's name has become synonymous with ecstastic exaltation...I mean he symbolizes all I hold dear and virtuous in this sometimes dirty world...trust me, there's nothing better...nothing even compares...this is in its own category, its own stratosphere...orders of magnitude clearer, less perverse, and more shiny than any other...you gotta do it...do it!...please, i beg you, get it done. O'Ransky, progeny of the Bull Even if you don't, make sure someone else does...someone you love...or someone with whom Stanhope could share.

What Is Family
Published in Hardcover by Dudley Inc (January, 2003)
Average review score:

What is Family? What an incredible book! I gave it to my friends children when their family was going through a divorce. It really helped his kids get through it and enabled them to see the positive side of things. Kids with all different types of families can learn from this book.
Not only is the message inspiring, but the beautiful illustrations are drawn by the author's 11 year-old sister who shows us
(in her own colorful way) the true meaning of a family. I would highly recommend this book to any child!

When Africa Was Home
Published in School & Library Binding by Orchard Books (March, 1991)
Average review score:

The most wonderful children's book about Africa I have foundMy daughter and I were simply delighted with this book, and we are voracious readers of tales from foreign lands. For the protagonist, a little American boy born in Africa, Africa is not another place, a foreign country, but the home that he knows and loves, described poignantly through the eyes of a child. It is the USA that is foreign and strange to him, although he acclimates with a sort of resigned acceptance. I won't spoil it by telling the end; I can only say that I hope you and your children enjoy it as much as we did.
